Lacquer

Hey, guys, Been a while since I have posted. Thought I'd show my face and ask a question :D I have been french polishing a lot of instruments.... and I am becoming very sick of it! I do love the method, but it is just not practical for the amount of time I have on my hands at this point in time. So ...

Re: Yet another bracing issue...

Hi been a while since I logged on sorry! No sound hole patch, just those two small braces. And yeah I should've used more robust braces either side of the soundhole. The top is just under 3mm. yes there is some radius! not sure how much though considering I mostly eyeballed the radius dish... I gues...

Re: Yet another bracing issue...

Here are some photos of the top, it’s Adirondack spruce if that’s helpful.

Yet another bracing issue...

Ok so just finished this beast, super stoked with the sound! 46266032-85C0-4E19-BEEB-6474AC250F85.jpeg I have nearly perfected all of my bracing weak spots. Nearly... There is still one which I hope to fix on future guitars. It is just between the X brace and the structural brace under the fretboard...

Bridge plate

Ok so I just noticed that I have somewhat messed up this bridge plate position in this dreadnought. As you can see in the attached photo the line is where it ends, and the front is where I placed the bridge on the top, so only about 2/3 of the bridge itself is over the bridge plate which isn't exact...

Re: Bellied up top

Thought I'd post a long overdue update! replacing the tone bars actually fixed the issue quite well. It decreased the bellying enough to make the guitar structurally sound. Unfortunately I cracked the top while taking the bridge plate off.... so a re-top is needed now anyway. Any bridge plate remova...

Re: Bellied up top

I am using small cedar go bars to clamp the bracing inside. As for the curvature it seems to have retained it quite well. I'm only planning on replacing the tone bars and bridge plate, I'll see how it is after that, if it's still playing up I'll do a re-top but I thought I'd take my chances. Ill pos...

Re: Bellied up top

Nope I decided not to take the top off, I spent many hours french polishing this one so I wanted to try preserve the finish. I used a finger plane and Carved the bracing off from the inside. I did this by putting an old phone inside the guitar and live streaming it to my laptop! IMG_20200327_1654455...

Re: Bellied up top

thanks for the responses. Ive decided to replace the tone bars and see how that goes. I also discovered this morning after another look that my bridge plate is too small, the back end of the bridge is on the very edge/hanging over the plate itself, so I'll replace that too. On the plus side I now ha...

Re: Bellied up top

Yes I moved everything towards the sound hole 13mm, Except the popsicle brace etc. Here is a photo when the top was off: IMG_20200205_113904740.jpg IMG_20200205_113913579.jpg IMG_20200205_113922881.jpg there is about 10/15mm of extra material around the edges of course that got cut off after the top...

Re: Bellied up top

Top thickness was originally 2.90mm. not sure what it was after final sanding. I was pretty careful so I didn't take too much off it.

Here is some bracing:

Bellied up top

So I just put strings on this beast, and it sounds excellent. But unfortunately it has bellied up, I am thinking it's either under braced or my top is too thin. It's not too bad at the moment but I think it will worsen. Any thoughts/Advice will be appreciated! P.S. It has forward shifted Scalloped A...

Drum sander

IMG_20200321_115955639.jpg IMG_20200321_120117723.jpg So my drum sander decided to give up the ghost and the gearbox driving the conveyer belt is Completely in the boondocks. My somewhat "DIY" sacrilegious fix is not cutting it... Anyone know where I can find a replacement motor? Was thinking of co...

Re: Truss rod Installation

Thanks for the responses. Im using a dovetail joint, and 4mm Hotrod Truss rods from stewmac. So do I leave the truss rod just sticking out of the end of the dovetail and use a long allen key?, how do I extend it out so its flush top brace??

Truss rod Installation

Ok so i've always installed truss rods with the opening on the peghead, but I would prefer to flip them around so they can be adjusted through the sound hole. The only problem is I have no idea how to do this.... I've looked online to see if i can find any pictures, tutorials or plans for reference ...

Neck wood

Alright so I've been on the look out for new neck woods, so far I've only been using black walnut, but I'm starting to run out.... I've got some oak here and was wondering if this would make a decent neck, some Rata too. What's everyone's go to neck timber?? I was also wondering what NZ native timbe...

Indian Rosewood Sanding issue

Aright so I'm having trouble thickening Indian rosewood, the resins in the timber keep on gumming up the sandpaper on my drum sander and burning the wood. Is there a solution for this?

Alright so I've never really used plastic binding before, and I'm wondering how it behaves with a french polish finish, does the shellac stick to it ok? i just don't want it flaking off after a while.
