Re: Bolt-on neck and Upper Transverse Brace

I see on the patent reference -- 10262633, that a fingerboard brace (utb) is a part of the neck block assembly. Its still there, but not on the soundboard assembly. I will probably go look at one anyway. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Bolt-on neck and Upper Transverse Brace

Mark clearly the utb is on the patent drawing, but all the Taylor videos and photos on their site show a strong transvers brace below the soundhole but not above. I am confused -- perhaps i need to visit a Taylor store, dental mirror in hand. Thanks for the reply.

Bolt-on neck and Upper Transverse Brace

Folks, I am starting a new SJ build (falcate or x-braced -- tbd) and looking at the relationship of the neck joint and upper transverse brace(utb). I see that Taylor has eliminated the utb in the v class bracing presumably because of their NT system. There appears to be a smaller transverse brace be...

Re: Tertiary braces -- need for carbon fiber?

Thanks Trevor,

I did CF both sides of all the lower bout braces but not the uppers. Initial testing of the closed body looks promising -- I'll see what happens after adding the bridge. Thanks again for the reply. Jack.

Tertiary braces -- need for carbon fiber?

I am wondering about the calculations for tertiary lower-bout braces. I am not seeing a discussion of this in the Trevor/Gore books nor this forum. With the much shorter spans, would non-cf braces be appropriate? Also the same question would apply to the braces surrounding the sound hole patch. Than...

Re: Testing existing top and back

Folks, I reran static testing multiple times and consistently get targets for both top and back of 2.1 mm, slightly less than current thicknesses of 2.3 mm . These calcs used a Glc of 0.72 GPa for Sitka and 2.0 GPa for the Rosewood. Note, I found a mistake in the Static spreadsheet I attached earlie...

Re: Testing existing top and back

Thanks Richard. The static test results are from a test jig using parallel rods and a linear load at center of span. I will look into published Glc values and recalculate target thicknesses. I'll rerun the static tests a few more times to get a sense of the reproducibility. Thanks for suggestions. J...

Re: Testing existing top and back

The top and back are free and the bracing has been removed. I am attaching spreadsheets for both the spectrogram and static tests; I trust none of the results. My best approach may be to do a new top with known properties and use the back with the current thickness (2.4 mm.) Once I have a reassemble...

Testing existing top and back

Folks, Many years ago (late '70s) I built my first guitar- I built it from Brazilian RW and Spruce. My abilities did not do justice to the wood. My abilities have progressed a bit and now have disassembled the guitar for rebuilding. I have tried gathering the spectrographic data to investigate thick...

Weisenborn - falcate braced

Just contemplating a Weisenborn build. One of the problems mentioned online is bridge rotation. Also the original bracing designs seem a bit haphazard (Stew-Mac and Mimf.) I have the Gore/Gilet books and it appears the math could be applicable. Has anyone applied falcate bracing to a Weisenborn? Jack
