Re: New member intro

+1, welcome!!

Would love to see more detail of your build. I have used CF for truss rod/neck reinforcement and have one falcate braced with CF tow so I use it but not like you do!!

Different is always interesting.

Re: Koa Soprano with Frangipani Inlay

That looks amazing. Particularly the combination of the blackwood binding with the Koa. I would not have thought they would go together but, clearly, they do.
Lovely work, as ever.

How many ukes have you built now Allen??

Re: Finishing disaster

Hi David, don't be too hard on yourself mate. I have tidied up a few old guitars and given them away too, know where you are coming from re no complaints. My first thought was solid colour but that's actually a lot of work too, by the time you commit to doing it properly. I think you just have to ch...

This is a poor photo but you get the general idea. I blackened the bolts as these looked too bright against the rosewood. 20211031_110210.jpg Here's a picture of the neck joint neck joint.jpg There are two bolts at the other end of the mortice that are done up from inside the soundhole. Re: Lockdown builds

They all look stunning but the PRS stands out to me. That purple(?) wash looks fan bloody tastic. Ive never tried to do that yet but maybe the next one I will. I think the joy of electrics is that you can go completely away from traditional guitars colours so you have lots of freedom to create somet...

Re: Decent electric kits?

My first Tele was a kit of electronics. I found a plan and made the wooden bits myself. Turned out ok to my untrained ear. Knowing what i do now, if i wanted to build a kitset Tele i would pick a stewmac kit https://www.stewmac.com/kits-and-projects/instrument-kits/electric-guitar-kits/t-style-elect...

Re: Air, Top and Back Resonances, Coupled and Uncoupled - Untensioned?

I disagree. Stiffness = EI/L all of which are constants for a given guitar. If you deform a flat plate into a curved shape that certainly increases its stiffness but in the range under which it is loaded by guitar strings, all response is in the elastic range of the material. If you look at the resp...

Re: Air, Top and Back Resonances, Coupled and Uncoupled - Untensioned?

"of course then it gets more interesting as under load, with presumably more "stiffness" as the top tenses, it will raise back up some I expect."

Nope.

Stiffness does not change with load. Stiffness is a constant. Deflection changes with load.

Re: New NZ member: locally available finishing products?

Hi Moose and welcome aboard. Greetings from the lockdown province!! Woods- As you are probably already aware, there are different schools of thought on how much difference the wood makes in a purely electric guitar. I don't say I am right but personally I don't think it makes a lot of difference or ...

Re: Drum sander

Ive got a generic 16/32 here in Auckland. I regularly use it to thickness sides and backs and have gone down to 2mm so i wouldn't get too stressed about the "no less than 3mm" spec. You do get snipe at either end but that seems to happen with any thickness

Re: Neck Taper

Interesting discussion I'm not building for sale so im not bothered about how long it takes to shape a neck. For me its one of the more enjoyable bits of building a guitar. I start with a 25mm thick plank and do the scarf first. I then spend a bit of time truing everything up on the jointer and with...

Re: Performax 16/32 Sander - belt tracking

Mine tracks to the other side, regardless of what I do with the adjuster. Mine didnt cost me $2000 though:)

The bigger issue for me is the snipe you inevitably get at the beginning and end of the piece as it either goes under or comes out of the rollers. Pain in the back side

Re: Tuning Components Off Note or On?

Well done Kevin. Its great when you can demonstrate the theory in practice. I think this demonstrates the real benefits of Trevors objective approach. There are things we can physically measure rather than trying to guess whats going based on what we think we hear. The other point about Trevors appr...

Re: Odd frequency spectrum

I'm not the falcate guru but I would not take too much notice of what the spectrum checks say until the end of the process when you have the guitar strung up. I have no idea what the particular peaks means, if it means anything. Its probably a good thing to do them as you go through, so that you can...

Just for reference I bought a set of 4 basic chisels (marples, plastic handles) in 1976, still using them. They work well enough.
Looking at the same thing now they cost two or three times as much as your Luban ones!.

Re: Newbie introduction

Hi Ricky Welcome, im in Auckland if that helps (but it might as well be Perth at the moment!!) Speaking purely for myself, im still making plenty of mistakes on my builds some of which are repeats which can be a bit depressing but overall its a great hobby. The finish quality will improve, for sure....
