"n00b" acoustic build vlog

I'm nearing halfway through posting a 22-video acoustic guitar build series concentrating on my still-evolving process. Since I'm a late starter I'm focusing on using engineering concepts to work around my limited experience and skills. There's a balance to be struck between showing every step in ex...

Interesting design. What is the top wood? As Martin says a very jazz feel to it.
It's Celery top pine. There was some sort of discolouration to the grain, but I think it kinda added to the look. Would've been even better if my resawing capabilities had yielded better bookmatching :)

Third build (finished second)

Turns out the ABG design from my first build scales down to both OM and Parlour sizes quite nicely. Here's my third build, which I finished second so that I could get a six-string setup under my belt before attempting a twelve. (The first was a fretless, which barely counts, lol.) 20220115_153140-01...

What's your sanding method. Are you using a hard or soft block behind the paper?

My shellac looks like gravy

All the YouTubers' mixes look like super transparent golden syrup or cognac or some other delicious foodlike substance. Could be a dud batch, but the smart money says it's because I used Bunnings Meths. All the online advice says "denatured alcohold 96 or 98" - can't seem to find that in Hobart. Loo...

Soundboard shows bracing after French polishing

Everything looks really nice in the white, then when there's a bit of gloss on it, the contours of the bracing are revealed. Admittedly I am making it hard for myself by using an A-frame bracing design (a la Tacoma), which is probably harder to conceal. My first insight: sand a bit of a crown into t...

My first build: a fretless ABG

Design I wanted to use A-frame bracing design with asymmetric soundhole, and carefully analysed the shape of four such instruments: Tacoma Thunderchief CB10 - regarded as one of the best production acoustic basses, sadly no longer being made Furch B61-CM - a very attractive design. This is a Czech ...

First build: fretless ABG

After a few years of furniture, jigs & tools and pipe-related accoutrements, I finally decided to stop procrastinating. I'll post some build pix in another section of this forum (they're also available on my website, www.cloneensemble.com ). A rough'n'ready demo on YouTube can be seen at https://www...

Re: Acoustic bass guitar bridge pin hole size - help please!

Thanks Mark & John. The pins I was using are white ones off ebay, from China. They've got a standard taper. In order to progress the setup I wrapped some masking tape around them (cut at the slots). I've just ordered as set from Australian Luthier Supplies - black ones with far less of a taper. Hope...

Acoustic bass guitar bridge pin hole size - help please!

I'm building an acoustic bass guitar, and I'm in a conundrum on the bridge. When the holes were 7mm, the string ball ends couldn't be forced down the holes. So I drilled them out to 7.5mm, and now the bridge pins are loose. And no, the ball ends are not stuck on the ends of the pins, they're folded ...
