Re: Left handed Selmer

Great stuff Wayne. It's funny how you can see something's a bit odd with the fret markers on the 'wrong' side then it dawns.

That blackwood is really something and the whole thing works well aesthetically.

Re: Acoustic side height calculation

Yup, fine tuning with the sandpaper covered radius dish. Must admit I haven't worried too much about the exact depth of my guitars. They all come out a bit different. I may be wrong but I don't think it makes a lot of difference - within reason.

Re: Walnut bend

This is not going to help much but I found my American Walnut behaved fine. However I have a bender that keeps tension on both sides of the timber enabling that fairly tight cutaway. I am at around 1.8 mm and bend at about 120 C. Reasonably damp but not soaking.

Good luck D

You've managed to keep that top nice and clean - I don't see splodges of epoxy all over! Also the CF is laid nicely.

Re: Edvin Guitars first falcate braced OM Size

You have managed really clean use of the epoxy with the cf. Mine.don't look any where near as tidy. The wheatsheah purfling looks great and I notice that you have given the top string some more space from the edge of the fretboard so it doesn't get pulled off. I would use a more sharp cutaway but th...

Re: Edvin Guitars first falcate braced OM Size

That looks excellently executed. Very dark Indian Rosewood. I have built a few falcates and the design just seems to work.

Did you find a need to adjust the frequencies with side masses?

Re: Modal Tuning with Trevor Gore Question

Jurgen I can't reply directly to your question but I can say that I purchased Trevor's video course on tap testing and acquriing sound spectra using VA and found it extremely useful. Far more detail than the book could give. So I would expect a course given by Trevor in person to be equally more inf...

Re: Used guitar repair

Vin Hi. I too am in the currently rather damp UK. I take it from your photos that you have replaced the knotted string ends with the more normal loop over the tie block... I do notice though that the saddle is a very poor fit in it's slot. This really should be a close fit. Also check that the botto...

Re: Shop listening recommendations

It's probably the dark winter days but I had a hankering after listening to Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands today. It didn't disappoint even after all the decades. I have no idea what he's talking about but I still love the whole sound of it. This is probably not something to play in the workshop! Dave

Re: Selmer d hole

And don't I seem to remember that selmac used a form of ladder bracing? I wonder what you are using?

Didn't they use a crease to give a good break angle?

As someone has said that back looks gorgeous.

Great aesthetic. Am interested in the bridge. Do you not use a removable saddle? Is the bridge material itself tough enough to carry the strings?

So Martin is this a fact about the non slip mats? I hadn't heard that. It could be really problematic. They really are useful in certain processes but if you are right we need to stop using them.

Re: Cross grain classical soundboard bracing

First an analytical approach has to be a good thing for whatever craft. John is entirely right that the bridge is a hugely stiff cross grain brace. Just hold one in your hands and try to flex it. I can't find the reference but somewhere in the G & G books there is a discussion of cross grain stiffne...

That's just what I was going to say. The carbon fibre and epoxy work is very tidy.

When you say crossover does that mean you will be putting pickups in?

Steve that is quite something. In particular the rosette is very attractive and quite different to the tradition.

I notice that you do a bit of intonation with a slanting saddle. Is that a carefully calculated amount or just a guestimate?

I have just come in from the workshop and I was looking round and thinking Jeez there's a lot of stuff in here. Whether I would get up to that figure I'm not sure, and I'm not sure I really want to know! It has built up over the years so has never felt like a big hit, and yes many of the specialist ...

Re: kerfed lining material?

For the reasons Martin gives I use European Beech. It's fairly cheap and it is easy to find nice straight lengths without knots. It also bends well.
