Re: Tips for a virgin electric builder.
What sucks even more is the things we need are so damn expensive. Responsibility sucks

Re: Hard V neck profile
My DBZ Halcyon has a softer V profile. It is oddly comfortable for rhythm playing, but not too good for soloing IMO. Each to their own of course.

Re: Tips for a virgin electric builder.
Cheers for all that Demon. A failure to plan, is a plain to fail. :dru I am still holding on to the dream of the build, but as I assumed the lutherie specific tools are probably going to push the budget past feasible :( I definitely wasn't going to touch exotic woods and laminate tops were out of th...

Re: Fret wire suppliers
I'm always up for suggestions :D My design is based off the Ibanez M80M ( click here for specs ) and they list the 24th fret as 80mm. Yes I have played it and it felt good in my hands. The RG2228 also has a 24th fret of 80mm and I have been playing on it extensively whilst my friend I serviced it fo...

Fret wire suppliers
I'm having trouble tracking down a supply of extra jumbo fretwire (Dunlop 6100 or Jescar 55xxx) that is in one roll and not a silly length like 100" where I only need a little less than 7" :? I'm building an 8 string guitar with a nut width of 55mm and a last fret of 80mm (that's wider than a 6 stri...

Re: Any of these timbers suitable for builds?
Believe it or not my old man has a portable sawmill on his farm outside of Wingham on the Mid-North coast of NSW. I'm checking out the commercial stuff first as there is a problem with twisting when a portable saw is used and I don't know if there's anything seasoned and of the needed thic...

Re: Any of these timbers suitable for builds?
Cheers for the info Pete. To be clear I'm not looking for timbers to replace the standard go to species. I just want them to be ethically sourced and preferably from a plantation, not from old growth. I want them to be useable as timber for an electric body, neck and fretboard. Price is significantl...

Not the most reliable source, but good enough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janka_hardness_test
According to Wikipedia Eucalyptus paniculata (Grey Ironbark) is even harder than ebony.

Sustainable is my main concern. These just happen to be endemic species.

Re: Any of these timbers suitable for builds?
According to the tone wood forum mentioned by Wade there is only the aforementioned Silver Wattle and Mountain Ash.
Hopefully one the list I posted is a suitable fretboard as the mountain Ash is looking like the goer for the neck and body.

Re: Any of these timbers suitable for builds?
Cheers Wade
I asked about these woods as they all have certified sustainable plantations and are not harvested from old growth forests.
And @Peter: Any experience with these woods in an electric?

Re: Tips for a virgin electric builder.
I actually agree with you there Nick. The electronics and amplification are the main determinants of an electric's sound. Woods and construction can assist with sustain though. Unlike an acoustic there is little body resonance in an electric and stiffer timbers will not absorb vibration as easily. T...

Re: Tips for a virgin electric builder.
The look of the timber is also relatively secondary to tone to a degree. I prefer consistent colour and grain. Price and suitability for instrument making are the two main factors.
