The Osaka Guitar Show 2012
At the risk of sounding weird, the things that I remember and enjoy the most are those that resonate with my heart. A prime example is wood transformed into beautiful guitars that sound good and play easily. Mostly for that reason, I guess, I took the afternoon off - I work most weekends - and took ...

Guitar restoration by Antonio Manjon (you tube video)
Recently I came across this restoration video by luthier Antonio Manjon, and I thought most of you might enjoy it. The guitar featured is a 19th C Rafael Ortega.

Re: opinions/feedback
A lot of volume and sustain, and they seem to be very responsive. Single notes sounded good. Beyond that, for the reasons Kim stated, I can't offer a fair comment. I have a feeling both guitars would be more suited to finger style than strumming with a plectrum, and from what I can see of it, very n...

Re: Soundboard Radius
The conventional wisdom, according to the voicing DVDs I studied, is that less radius helps to give comparatively more bass. I was using 33ft radius on mini jumbos (40cm across the lower bout). Then I made a 30 ft radius dish and I'm giving that a try in my latest attempt at building the holy grail....

Good! I'll look forward to that. Its just about impossible to buy decent green tea in Australia. The muck sold in supermarkets is undrinkable. I'll bring some Uji cha or good quality Ureshii cha over with me. Just fantasising, but maybe in a few years time we can organise a local guitar show. How ab...

Very glad to hear you were minimally affected considering the extent of devastation. I can't fathom the amount of rebuilding and resettling that needs to be done, but I sincerely hope the future is a little brighter there. Jeremy. Thanks for your kind words. With a bit of luck, the work and money i...

Re: Tree to billet: Japanese perssimon
I can hardly believe you got those pieces in the back of the car. It wasn't easy. Japan has a mad ukulele following. You might want to try your hand at building some with the smaller pieces you've got there. I didn't know that, and frankly, I don't know much about ukes. Music shops here are full of...

Tree to billet: Japanese perssimon
Persimmon trees are not uncommon in Japan where I've been living for the past 14 years, although its rare to find one more than 50 years old. They are said to belong to the same genus as ebony. The most common varieties produce delicious fruit. The wood from these trees is mostly straw coloured, som...

Just after the server crash, some low life Pr*#k's walked into our house while I was out in the shed and my wife had gone to bed. Stole our 2 Mac Books and my wallet. We lost all our data and a few $$$ plus all my cards and id... We are planning on moving back to the "lucky country" sometime within...

Re: My new fret slotting saw
There's generally a bit of end play in the shaft of cheaper saws. I suppose it isn't enough to be a problem. Bloody good idea!

Try using a steel, diamond coated sharpening block. I don't know if that's how the job is supposed to be done, but I can tell you that it works with no detriment at all to the diamond coated block. The ones I have are heavily plated, similar to the type Stewmac sells as diamond fret levelers, but th...

G'day Folks The recent Server problems were caused by someone from Eastern Europe hacking into the system and deleting all of the information on the hard drives. Thanks Matthew and Xray. Its a subject that interests me too. There is quite a bit of info available on line about do-it-yourself solar driers and resawing, but not a lot about dehumidifier driers, and unfortunately the two URLs listed in that pdf download are no longer available. This page includes...

Allen, its bloody awesome. Truly inspiring work. A couple of questions. What type of graver did you use? Stewmac has 3 types: a general purpose type, one for lettering / lining, and one for curves and fine lines. Did you buy one of those? The peghead veneer looks uniformly black. Did you stain it so...
