Re: Worst case scenario - how well prepared are we?

Actually CA was developed as a quick fix battle field dressing or used as that early on. Sure it's better to have the sterile stuff but I use the Bunnings stuff all the time on cuts (works better once the bleeding stops).

Re: I need some help!

You can get a fair bit of instruction on youtube, especially if not starting from scratch. Maybe check out Marty Schwartz

Re: NZ source for CA glue?

I just use Selley's Quick Fix liquid and gel from bunnings but these are still just the little tubes. I think Carbatec has some bigger ones called Hot Stuff in three viscosities and larger sizes but never tried it. All I use it for is filling small gaps, inlays, fretwire ... I think that's about it.

Re: Swamp kauri OM

Thanks, it does ring nicely. I find it's brighter but not quite as full and resonant as the one I made from the rimu you sold me. Yeah, we love it here but it's awfully far from family. Now I just need to figure out how to get as much NZ tonewood as I can before I leave!

Re: Swamp kauri OM

Funny enough, the other one I have been working on is rimu with puriri fretboard and bridge :). I'll let you know when I'm packing things up and getting ready to sell. Any chance you'd want a Carbatec drum sander as well? Not sure if I'll be able to sell that around here or not. Can PM me if you wan...

Re: Swamp kauri OM

These bits came from Rarefind Timbers. They are not tonewood specialists but it seems they've improved their selection criteria over the past few years judging by the pictures on their site. Others may know more but I think there is some distinction between ancient kauri, the stuff thats tens of tho...

Re: Swamp kauri OM

Thanks. Yeah the chimney was not ideal for the waist (or any of it really), especially as it's in the corner and hard to get the last bend done. Not to mention too hot to stand near after a while. While I was trying to not buy something I know I'll have to turn around and sell, I've since upgraded t...

Swamp kauri OM

I've been mostly lurking around but now that I've (nearly) finished my most recent guitar, I figure it's time to chime in more. My name is Eric Scheper and I'm American living in New Zealand for the last 5 years or so. I live in Gisborne which is out on the east coast of the North Island and purport...

Re: how long does it take to build an acoustic

I'll second the kit idea but sounds like you have more experience than I did when I did my first one a year ago. I got one from LMI and can highly recommend them, even with the extra shipping cost. I'd say it's taken me 60-80 hours on the last couple and I have no background in tools or wood or buil...

Re: First acoustic builds.

Soulman, I'm about to put together a go bar deck and like yours. What wood did you use for your go bars and what size were they? What was the height of the top deck? Woodsy I found some 6m long lengths of thin fiberglass (about 5mm I think) from a website that sells kite boarding supplies and cut t...

Also, the paua is a Lacey Act issue not a CITES issue, if I remember correctly.

Re: How come Amercia can freely sell brazilian rosewood

I thought the only stuff available in the US is the stuff that's been there since before 1992 or whenever the BR was added to the CITES list because it is illegal to import or export the wood. It's just trapped there as far as I can reckon. But at least they recently said they wouldn't be seizing pe...

Re: Calling all Kiwis - What Bandsaws are you using?

I recently got one of the 14 inch Taiwanese models (Tool Shed) which seems made well enough and has performed satisfactorily for most tasks. It's only a 1hp motor and I tried to resaw some tenor uke sized backs and tops and it really didn't have the power to do it well enough. I'm surprised to see t...
