Opinion's needed Huon back & sides

How would Huon pine work for back and sides on a L5? I have a nice piece cut from a very old log that was raised from the depths of a lake and it's estimated age is around 3000 year's, it is heavy and quite hard unlike other Huon pine I have handled, not sure of it's wax content at this age.

Re: Anyone heard from Nick

I got some of the goods he was selling and he was very slow in getting back to, when he did he said he was in the middle of a 4 12hr run, so I think he is OK just trying to get fit maybe. I got all my stuff and all is good.

Re: bad news....for me.....

My son-in-law and I are about to build a few guitars over xmass just for ourselves no clients, as soon as I said I was building a baritone he wants one too etc. etc. How much would it all add up to for the myrtle, bearclaw, Zebrawood, and rimu set w/neck etc. and if you have any other neck's left. I...

Re: bad news....for me.....

Sorry to hear Nick, I can sympathise with you as I have allergies that has bowled me over for the last 8 months or so but the best I have felt in years was when I built my guitar now I am going to have a second go, was thinking of a acoustic bass now I might give a baritone acoustic a go, with the s...

Re: I am going to have a second go.

Hey Pete, it's good to here from you. I do have some Jarrah laying around I will give that some thought as I do like Jarrah, I have no intention of a fan fretted bass like the one you built. Building guitars and dropping in on the jazz jam session is a great stress release for both Rhonda & I, the t...

Re: I am going to have a second go.

I bought it at the Sydney woodworkers show a couple of weeks ago and I would say it's NG snakewood. If you think it's to soft I have some macassar ebony that might be long enough, I also have some tight grained rosewood and some ebony from where I don't know I have had it for quite a while it has a ...

Re: Just a bit of romance

Cedar definitely flexes more than spruce, I just compared the both this afternoon, now I know why the bracing for the top on my new build is pretty intense using curved bracing and carbon fibre.

Re: spraygun replacement

A gravity feed gun is the best I find with suction guns they use to much air, with the gravity feed you can adjust it where you want it. I use a Devilbiss gti needle and cap size is 12to 14 (I have both) almost every day some jobs are real small some are large, same gun for both, always 2k. You shou...

Re: I am going to have a second go.

Well this is what I am considering, please tell me if it won't work.
? cedar top
Rimu back & sides
snakewood fingerboard
Rosewood neck

I did consider silky oak for the neck as i have a nicely figured piece about 70mmx70mm, would that be possible?

Re: I am going to have a second go.

I do have a plan that was given to me and it shows the 2 truss rods and 2 9x3 carbon fibre bars I figured it was a bit of overkill. My idea of the laminated neck is mostly cosmetic. I don't like the tassie blackwood along side of the cedar it seems to clash, I might try to put up some pics tomorrow ...

As my first guitar didn't get many comments as it proberly wasn't up to standard I gave it away for a while but I just saw this timber you have and I thaught I might give it a go and make another one. So how much for a board that I can resaw delivered to Sydney.

It was very hard to buy a decent set of strings after xmass near me all sold out of the good stuff. I DON"T like the strings on it at the momement, the third string is fatter then the sixth.

I live halfway up the hill (as we call it) and there's about 50 firemen in my street waiting for fires started by falling cinders, not sure if it makes me feel safer or more nervous.
